The animal world of the present Kopaonik is various from time when, even, Josif Pančić was reasearching (100 years before). In 19 century there was bears, lynxes, chamoises, grouses, martens, otters...
Today, the only species left are wolf and other game such as wild boar, doe, fox, hare, weasel, skunk... Among the natural rareties (under protection) had left: Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), grey falcon (Falco peregrinus), forest owl (Strih aluco), mountin lark (Eremophila alpestris), red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra), grey pooh (Dryomys nitedula), Owl (Bubo bubo), wildcat (Felis silvestris), lizzard (Lacerta vivipara).

The most numerous survival species on Kopaonik are birds because they are not related to vegetation and climate zones. Our famoust ornitologist, Sergej Matvejev, with his life-long bird’s research on Kopaonik, found that number of birds have increase in last 100 years. Today, there are 184 different bird species!
The brown trout lives in the clear waters and rapids, which population grow since stocking of these waters and rapids what was one of the priority tasks of NP Kopaonik. Some researches are on-going and they are related to fortify of mamal’s numbers which NP Kopaonik leads with a group of experts from Biological facultety in Belgrade.
